Most Amazon sellers judge their listing by one metric: sales. But by the time poor visuals show up in your sales data, you've already lost thousands of impressions to competitors with better images.

The VAS Score (Visual Assessment Score) is a 0–100 rating that measures how well your listing answers the questions buyers are actually asking — before they click Buy.

Why visual quality isn't enough

You can have technically sharp, well-lit product photos and still score 45/100. Here's why: Amazon's RUFUS AI doesn't evaluate photo quality. It evaluates whether your images answer buyer questions.

A buyer searching "soft bath towel gift" is implicitly asking: How soft is it? What size? Is it gift-ready? Can I see it in a bathroom? If none of your 7 image slots answer those questions visually, RUFUS tells the buyer "information not available" — and they leave.

The 10 dimensions

Your VAS Score is calculated across 10 dimensions, each mapped to a specific category of buyer question:

  • Image Quality (0–15): Resolution, sharpness, exposure. The baseline.
  • Visual Appeal (0–15): Composition, colour, professional finish.
  • Information Clarity (0–10): Can buyers read what the product is from the thumbnail?
  • Feature Highlight (0–10): Are key features like material or specs shown visually?
  • Lifestyle Context (0–10): Is the product shown in real-world use?
  • Size & Scale (0–10): Can buyers judge the actual dimensions?
  • Trust Signals (0–10): Are certifications, guarantees, or quality markers visible?
  • Brand Consistency (0–5): Do images feel cohesive with a recognisable brand identity?
  • Mobile Thumbnail (0–10): Does the hero image convert on a 150px mobile preview?
  • RUFUS Readiness (0–5): How many of RUFUS's top buyer questions are answered visually?

A listing scoring 45/100 typically has good image quality but fails on lifestyle context, size reference, and trust signals — the three most-missed dimensions.

What's a good score?

Based on our analysis of thousands of Amazon listings: scores below 60 leave significant conversion improvement available. Scores of 75+ are competitive. Scores of 90+ are rare and represent listings optimised for AI-era search.
